"If only we could all see the humor and color in everyday life."
Cherie Heringer

Artist's Statement and General Comments

Making an artist's statement sounds like a big commitment to me. But for certain exhibits and venues, an artist's statement is required so I'll do my best to explain why I paint, create, write, and generally muse about life.

From the earliest years, I was in some form of creative activity - the earliest being the cherub choir at our church when I was about six years old. Then it was more choirs as I got older, musical instruments, dance, band, theater, writing, photography, painting, and more. I've never known life without some form of creative expression.

Much, but not all of my painting is abstract expressionism and abstract landscapes. Color and movement fascinate me and I've come to realize on most of my good days, I see the world through the lens of colorful abstract. Ask someone about me and they're likely to mention something about a sense of humor, and that is true. There is a lot of comedy in everyday life and I'm much more likely than not to find it. Or it finds me.

However, there's much to be taken seriously in life as well, and I have a passion for social justice and squashing that which is the ugly part of the soul. You'll likely see more of that in my writing than in my painting. Through my particular craft, I hope to expose traits of mistrust, but more importantly, bring light, color, and smiles to the lives of those who need it. And don't we all?

But on the good days - and there are many more of those - you'll find that my work reflects the color, vibrance, beauty, and charmingly unexpected. For that reason, I hope you enjoy my work.
